Online Store is Officially Up!

  Good morning, my lovelies. ^-^

  In the past I used to use the "Store" tag on my blog as a substitute to a store... However, as of yesternight, my online art store has officially been set up. Woohoo~ (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧ The store is linked on my personal art website. Information on the art pieces is listed on each individual listing including the size, and materials used. There's also paypal checkout within the store, so payment is now easier and secure!

  In the future, all new art works that I would like to put up for sale would be updated to that store. As of now, I'm only selling original works so there aren't any prints listed. I've also put up one listing for customised portraits.

  I plan on adding hand made iPhone cover designs, and an Artist Trading Card listing soon. I might also start selling art materials in the future. Let me know any other ideas that you might have in the comment section below.

  I appreciate all the e-mails I've received in the past from artists who've said I've helped them. I'm glad my blog could help anyone looking for info on art-sy things in Singapore, or anyone looking for inspiration. And I hope that my blog will continue to grow and help others in the Art community.

Geisha (in a week): Day 7- Completed!

  Part of my "Geisha in a Week" blog series.

  So, it's finally finished. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Beautiful simplicity. Gorgeous line work. I couldn't be more happy with how much I've improved over the years. The inspiration behind it was when I saw another artist doing a drawing of a geisha, and I thought, "Hey, that's a great idea. I should draw a geisha too." And here we are. :)

Yin-Yang Fish- Completed!

  I'm actually really pleased with myself for finishing this in two days and not dragging it out till forever... I think it's a beautiful drawing and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The lines are clean; everything is nicely inked; no smudges and all that. Now I'm just left with framing it.

Stephanie's Sketches v.9

  A quickie update on what I've been up to lately;

I finally got around to completing this piece. It's barely visible but I inked in the water background in light grey, plus I added my "signature" (the red stamp on the top left hand corner). Quite pleased with how this turned out.

My desu octopus. It was an idea I had and I finished it pretty quickly. I like how clean the lines are; and I'm thinking of adding a watercolour background but I don't want to mess it up. So we'd see....

  In other news, I've been giving out a few of my artist trading cards (a.k.a. ATCs, or personalised artist name cards). I've hung up some of my paintings in my boss' office. :) And~ I've been drawing more often. Stephanie's Sketches v.8

  What have I been up to for the past week or so... Lots, really. I've gotten my inspiration back after about two weeks of nothingness. Which is really great. Getting back into my Portrait Series. I'm doing more zentangle pieces. I've also started a new series- Aesop's Fables Series. The idea behind that series is that it'd be done on black paper, with silver ink, and be in a circle format. I'm hoping to do six pieces for that series. :)

This is actually a close up of the fox. I'm thinking of adding some typography to it, but I haven't decided on what quote I'm going to add as of now. Untitled right now.

An update on my cranes which you saw in my previous . I'm doing a light grey line background to represent the water, but I've been procrastinating finishing it. Oopsies.

You can't really tell from the picture but I used silver ink in this.

Cranes. I seem to have taken a liking to line art these days.

I thought the lines looked cool and wondered how it'd look like with colour, so I added some with my Prismacolors. I think it looks pretty cool, and I'd like to finish it soon.

  I guess my biggest hurdle is to actually finish projects that I start. The perfectionist in me is always saying that what I produce is never perfect enough. Perfection is, however, unattainable. We are but humans. We are imperfect and thus what we create would always be imperfect. We make mistakes; we live, we love, we learn...

What I've been up to lately...

  Sketching on the train. The owl was a pain in the ass to finish, but gawd, it was worth it. It's been a really long while since I last drew an owl... The owl holds a special place in my heart, as a symbol of wisdom and as the animal of Goddess Athena and Goddess Minerva, both were Goddesses of Art and Warfare.

  Random zendoodle with paisleys that I decided to abandon... I like my new silver uni-ball pen though. I've also made a mental note to start doing more zendoodles.

Stephanie's Sketches v.6

  I've been really busy lately. With work, and with a new art project (more on that later in this post). As you know, I've been drawing on my way to and fro work in the train. It's been nice cause I get to produce new art work every week, and random strangers have given nice comments to me. Some weeks are less creative than others; on those weeks, I usually just read a book on my Kindle on the way to work (e-books are magic, by the way. I can have fourteen different books plus a dictionary all in one device. Holy crap, that saves lots of space in my bag.). On other weeks though, I produce lots of drawings.  Last week was one of those productive weeks. :)

  One of the things I was frustrated by, though, was that store-bought sketchbooks were heavy and only had one type of paper in them. I wanted flexibility, without having to bring three different sketchbooks out with me. So I came up with a solution. I used a small binder file as a sketchbook; put different papers inside it, and voila! My own custom sketchbook without the hassle of binding the papers and all that fuss. The binder, I bought from Daiso. [Related: Daiso Outlets in Singapore] This binder fits B5 papers. (A4 papers cut into half.)

  Allow me to illustrate:

  If I ever need new paper, I just cut papers into the correct size, punch two holes in the paper, and file it into the "sketchbook". The big plus point to this is that if I don't like a certain work, I can easily remove the page and throw it away. This has greatly reduced my fear of "ruining the sketchbook", which in turn, makes me far more willing to experiment.

  See? Loose leaflets of papers on the left, and a work in progress on the right. In this picture, I have 90gsm white paper, white tracing paper for rough works, beige pastel paper, and black Derwent paper. Customizability, without being overly complicated. Kind of reminds me of the times when I was in school and we had to file papers into different binders....

Tiger in colored pencils on Bristol Board, Work In Progress.

  So, the portraits project is the new project I'm taking on. As you can see, I currently have an obsession with line art. The tiger piece has been a WIP since 30th Sept. 2013.... (Yes, I do keep track of when I start a project). And it's taken so so long and it's not even done, and I am quite upset because of that... Ugh~ It reminds me of another one of my colored pencil art work, "Hazel Bird". It took me forever to complete it, but it turned out really good at the end. Though, I'd like to finish it soon. So I should get to work now. 

  It's just, it's really tough to get the motivation to sit down for an hour plus after I finish work and work on a big project like the tiger.... Smaller, easier-to-manage projects like my current portraits series keep my creativity going, but I really should be more disciplined.

  Life's tough. With work, and trying to still do personal projects. Trying to stay healthy by eating right and getting exercise. Trying to expand my social circle. Hoping that the love of my life will come back to me soon, but trying to distract myself from him by engaging in other activities instead of pining for him... It's tough. All of it.

  I keep reminding myself that life's not meant to be easy. I keep reminding myself of all the blessings that I have. I keep reminding myself that my Art is something that will keep growing, and evolving, and changing just as I do too. I'm trying to keep sight of my goals. And sometimes... Sometimes life goes down down down... But you gotta keep your chin up, sweetheart. Because you learn through experiences, people, and things. 

  Life's just a mish-mash of contradictions. You're one of those contradictions. The people in your life are bundles of contradictions as well. And you know what? That's what makes them unique. And that's what makes life worth living.

  It'll be the start of March tomorrow. A new month. One quarter of the way into 2014. I can feel change happening. Things will get better. I took a review at how much my style in art has evolved over the past year, and I'm really happy at my growth. Keep you chin up. Things will get better. And to all you lovely artists reading this, keep your pens, pencils, pastels, brushes (and everything else that you may do) moving, and keep creating gorgeous works of art. :)

"Interconnected" by Stephanie Jennifer   From the Series.

  This piece, has quite a bit of symbolism to it. I happened to be taking the train home one day, and I was just watching everyone around me as they walked... And I started imagining that each of us had red strings coming from our heart, linking us to each person that we met in our lives. In this way, I thought that we were all connected in some ways or another- all connected by the red threads from our hearts. So this piece has black splatters on it, representing each human being. And the doodle "Paradox" represents the red thread that connects us to each other, and they are constantly growing and evolving...

  The yellow of the background is actually neon yellow in real life, but the camera seems to suck the life out of the colour... This is the first of an abstract series that I'm calling "My Constellation".

  My mother thinks that something is missing from it. I'm undecided on the matter, and thus I'm going to let it sit around for a while. What do you think? Is something missing from it, or is it good just the way it is?

  All sketches are done in my Monologue sketchbook, which I love to bits, from Popular (selling at $18.75) Also, I've been asked this question quite often; What do you call the sort of art you do?

  It's called "Zentangle". You should google it. It's a form of meditative art, and the works that I do are Zentangle™ inspired.

"Fortitude" by Stephanie Jennifer

  "Fortitude" by Stephanie Jennifer. A zentangle inspired art work created for my god-mother who had a brush with throat cancer. She underwent surgery and is doing good now. About the drawing; The bear's paw print represents strength, and the mandalas represent sacred geometry and link to spirituality. The zentangle "paradox" is included as it is one of my favorite doodles, and I also included "diva dance" and various other new zentangle patterns I learnt recently.

  It's time like these that make me stop and think about the fragile line we walk on between life and death, sickness and health. It is also times like these that make me thankful for the advancement in Science that enable us to live longer.

  It'll be Christmas soon... Then the New Year's will follow quickly. I hope you, dear reader, are safe and sound, and are enjoying good health. Take a moment to be thankful for the blessings that you have, for your family and friends, and for the other things that we often take for granted.

Stephanie's Sketches: v.4 (... and a review of Zequenz Signature sketchbook)

  Hello, dear followers. The weather has been terribly rainy these few days, so I apologise for the terrible lighting in these photos... Here's what I've been up to lately though, and a review of the Zequenz Signature sketchbook.

  And, I've bought a Zequenz Signature sketchbook from Popular. It boasted that *picks up spectacles to read pamphlet* "hand-made collection... distinctive design... unconventional curved binding... and full 360 flexibility".

  The faux leather feels good to hold. I like the magnetic bookmark provided with the Zequenz sketchbook. It opens up beautifully and I'm in love with the curved binding. However, my only gripe is that the paper within the sketchbook is too thin.... :( Which is a shame because if the company provided more weightier papers, the Zequenz could completely become The Sketchbook. Some sketches I've made so far in the Zequenz:

  The paper is snow white in colour, just that my camera picks it up as beige-y. 

  There was some bleed-through in places where I wanted some pure black... Little specks of black on the next page is slightly annoying, but the sketchbook is light-weight and portable. The paper within the Zequenz is, I would guess, 80gsm. Thus, I would recommend it for people who like taking notes on-the-go, but not artists who want to do more intricate works. I tote it around because I absolutely love the 360 flexibility of the book.

Stephanie's Sketches: v.3

  It's Friday in Singapore. I hope you have something awesome planned for the weekend, and if you haven't had the bestest week, here are some recent sketches. They were all done in my red monologue sketchbook, which I bought from Popular.

"Owl" in signo pens. I quite like how it turned out, actually.

"Stylised Wolf" in signo pens. Some people say it's a fox, others say it's a bear... Oh, well.

 "Bonne Nuit" in Zig clean color and signo pens. I like the composition but I need to learn how to make background washes more uniformed... It looks rather blotchy in this piece.

 "Flareron" in signo pens. I have plans to explore this kind of 'negative drawing effect' in the future. 

 "Learn From Cats" in signo pens. I need to remind myself to not be so uptight sometimes...

Work In Progress. "Je Taime", which means "I love you" in French. 

"Lovely Creativity" in signo pens. It was something my boyfriend, Kai, said to me; "Don't waste all that lovely creativity." It made me smile so I decided to make it into a typography work. I attempted to convey what each of the word felt like.

"Silent Roar" in pastel and coloured pencil white. I stuck a black piece of Derwent paper onto the sketchbook just so that I could draw this piece. I really like how it turned out.

  As some of you may know, I currently have a full time job, and it requires a lot of travelling, so what I do is that I sketch out the bases of each piece at home during my free time, and then on the train I ink them out. There shouldn't be any excuses as to why you can't find any time to draw. It's only a matter of whether you want to or not.

  A lot of things have changed in my life... With my current job I have to really be dedicated to continuing my personal artistic advancements, I now have a lovely boyfriend who loves me and has been really encouraging me to improve my art and myself... I have learnt to balance work, with family, with love, with my passion in arts. It's not been easy, but it's been extremely fulfilling.

  Funnily enough, even though I now have less personal time I am now creating much more personal works... Perhaps it's due to the fact that I'm now more disciplined and am now managing my time better. We're almost a month away from 2014. How exciting and dizzily splendiferous 2013 has been.. and how time has flown by.
