  Here's what I've been up to in the past weeks... First off, some tiles from the Travelling Tangles Project.

  Let's start with this beautiful circle tile from Elena Greer...

  A tiny Bijou from Yvette Campbell. 

Shading done using Peerless watercolours. White highlights done using a Uni-Ball Signo Broad pen.

  Joey van Oort sent this tile to me for the June 2017 Flower Swap.

I tried to have the tile look like a flower. It was coloured using Peerless watercolours, and the white highlights are from a Uni-Ball Signo Broad pen. 

  I did some prep-work for my Zentangle classes... Tiny coloured squares made using watercolours.

  Which I think inspired what I drew for this week's It's A String Thing #235 (top). My tile for the Diva challenge is below it. We were asked to use our name as a string.

  Lastly, here's a pretty seashell I drew using Caran D'ache's Neocolor II. I really like how it turned out and am looking forward to creating more of such painterly drawings using my Neocolors.

In case you were wondering: the ballpoint pen is included in the picture because that's what I used as the outline for the shell.

Inktober Tangles Week One

Here's a tile I did for Travelling Tangles Project. It was sent to me from Laura van Erp. She did the two little Paradox-Cadents. (If you'd like to learn how to draw them, you can watch this video.) I added Diva Dance Waltz and Hollibaugh, then used watercolours to complete the background, and finally, added some Printemps using a white Uni-ball Signo pen.

  Here's my seventh tile for Joey's challenge. Featuring the lovely Printemps.

  Here's my tile for Joey's challenge:

  Here's a tile from Raye Burnett for the Travelling Tangles Project. Raye started with Flux on the corners. So I decided to echo that with a lot more Flux-y tangles. Ando is featured, along with Fe-Ba for the background. And I don't know whether the top band in the quarter circle has a name but I've been using it in my tiles quite often lately. Shading was done with Tombow marker 977, and highlights were added with a white Uni-ball Signo pen.

  There's a beautiful golden glimmer to it that the camera didn't pick up, so I took a video to show you, instead.

  On a personal project front, I did some tiles in a rainbow format to play around with my Tombow markers.

  These ones made up a circle, like a China plate.

  And here's one tile with very beautiful edges.

  In other news, I will be going to an event to work on part of the art installation titled "Tree Canopy" by Japanese artists Hirotoshi & Nami Sawada at the Tower Wing of Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. The event is happening this coming Tuesday, 12th September, from 7:30pm. I will make a post about it the day after. :)

heARTland project

  We had our last workshop for Bukit Batok East Community Centre. The idea is that over three workshops, residents from Bukit Batok East would come together to create a large 4m by 1m (13 feet by 3 feet) community art work to be displayed at an art fiesta happening in July. The event is called "heARTland" (how cute) and will be held near Toh Guan Park RC.

  In other news; I'm part of an eight teacher team that will be teaching an online journal course. In my video, I will teaching you how to merge tangles together. Here's the final outcome that you'll get.

  On to weekly challenges... Joey's tangle for this week was "Yuma", so here's my tile for it.

  So I decided to use the same tangle to complete Diva's challenge: drawing with your opposite hand. I wasn't really nervous... Didn't really have any expectations on how things would turn out... I have never drawn with my non-dominant hand, though, so this was new. I just went with the flow. I did this tile first before the one for Joey's challenge. Doing this made me understand what some people whom I teach Zentangle workshops to mean when they say "my hand isn't listening to my brain". I don't feel terrible about the outcome. It was a good experience. I think when you let go of any expectations of what your drawing should look like, you'll have fun no matter what. :)

Finally, here's a personal project that I just completed. I made all the tiles entirely using Tombow markers (from the backgrounds, to the tangles, to the shading). If you're located in Singapore, you can buy Tombow markers from here.

warm summers

  I hope you're enjoying your summer. Singapore is a tropical country so we don't get seasons. But it seems like I've been using a lot of flower-y tangles lately...

   A family friend has a birthday a while ago. And my mum and I *finally* got around to creating a tile together as a present for that friend.

I did the Ando and Tipple. She did everything else.

  Here's a throwback to Joey's Challenge #114. Featuring Shattuck, Barber Pole, Cheesecloth, and an "XIV" string...

I did another variation of this challenge, but me being me, I haven't gotten around to completing it just yet. Oopsies. I'll get there, though... Eventually.

  Here's my entry for this week's Diva Challenge:

I used some inspiration from this week's Joey's Challenge- Maryhill. See whether you can see the Maryhill fragments in the tile. There's also Afterglo (which is a new tangle to me), Printemps, and some other lines.

  Sticking with the black-white-red theme... Here's a tile I completed for the Travelling Tangles Project. This was done with Jo Flaherty.

She did the bottom portion and the small red thingie at the top right corner.
I added Crux and Snail.

  To be honest, I never quite like how my Renaissance tiles turn out. This beauty was from Kim Aarts-Bruins. I added Ando and Dervish. But I didn't like how my shading turned out... The grey graphite made things look muddy. The members in the Travelling Tangles group assured me that it looked just fine, so I guess we are our own worst critique. 

Kim sent me another tile with Singapore Sling on it. And that tile is white, so I'm sure I'll have a better time with that tile.

  What's happened in the past week? I've been busy teaching Zentangle classes. My work schedule is a hot mess and every single day starts and ends at very different timings. However, it's been extremely fulfilling, very rewarding, and I am constantly reminded about how lucky I am to be able to do what I love for a living.

  I had a workshop at Marina Square on the 18th/19th... Here's a selfies I took whilst waiting for my mum to grab coffee before we set up for the event:

  And because I've been so busy sharing the Zentangle method with others, the time I have to create things has dramatically been reduced. But when there's a will, there's a way.

I taught "Featherfall" in one of my classes.
Here's what one of my students did.

  And I liked that class so much that I created an ATC with Featherfall. I'll be sending it to my godmother who's living half-way round' the world in New York.

  I completed this tile with Muniza Askari for the Travelling Tangles Project.

She did the pink and black Yuma. I added the "Breathe" typography" and shading with coloured pencils. It's been a while since I last worked with coloured pencils, so this was good fun.

  More tiles from Travelling Tangles. The ones featuring Singapore Sling are from Kim Arts. The middle one is completed and only needs shading. The tile on the right is a present for a friend who is currently living in London. It still needs some work, plus shading. :)

  And lastly, a page from my sketchbook.

I always start things in my sketchbook and never get around to completing them.
But because I've been out of the house a lot these past few weeks, I've managed to complete more drawings in my sketchbook. Drawing on the train is challenging but fun.
Here, you see Citrus, Cruffle, Salo, Printemps, and lots of Tipple.

  And that's about all I've got for this week. I've been *trying* to participate in weekly Zentangle challenges, but never get around to finishing them in time.   If you haven't already heard, Stephanie started a new project called "Travelling Tangles". Travelling Tangles is a collaborative project that aims to show how the Zentangle® method can bring people from around the world closer to one another. The idea is that you will draw on an original Zentangle tile but only finish the drawing half-way. Then you will send it off to another person for him/her to complete it. In exchange, they too will half finish a tile and send it to you for you to complete. Both you and the other person will then each have a tile to keep.

  Stephanie and I have been busy with Zentangle® classes, but have still managed to find time to create tiles to send to others. Here is the first batch of tiles that I sent out:

  Stephanie also posted a video of her showing off two Zentangle cards that she made. The idea was thought up by Grace Mendez.

  Here are some pictures of each layer of the cards:

  She didn't show this part of one of the cards in the video, but the two sides of the flaps actually converged in the back of the card. I thought it was very creative!

the start of something new

  As always, I've been creating lots in the past week.   ^-^

Initially, I wanted to add Tipple or SharlaRella to the background, but I settled on keeping it really simple.

Moving on to something more complex.

I used lots of SharlaRella this week, didn't I?

  Unfortunately, I didn't take part in many challenges because none of them really spoke to me. I did, however, participate in Adele's "It's a String Thing #128". Here's my submission for the challenge:

We used String #129, with Paradox and Hypnotic.
I decided to do a monotangle. I love the string, though, and I had so many ideas that I wanted to try... Definitely going to use the string again soon.

I have trypophobia- the fear of holes, and this tile triggered it a little... I had to set it aside once or twice when I would overthink things.... I'm happy with how it turned out, though.

More Zengems! Paired it with Flux and Crescent Moon.

With this one, I was trying out Chainging. Did the gem in the centre, and then thought a simple background would look better.

  Here's the something new that I mentioned in the title of this post:

  I'm starting a tangle-a-day project. I know that Carole Ohl sells her own tangle-a-day calendar, but I was looking for something smaller... Just a small square for each day that I could complete within ten minutes as a warm up. I created this calendar that is printable in A4 format and I'm sharing the template with all of you for your own personal use. I also give permission to all CZTs to share this with their students in class. Please do not sell the template, or upload it elsewhere. You can download the calendar page from this link. I hope you have fun with it, and enjoy using it as much as I have had so far. I'll also be uploading February's calendar a few days before the month starts. So look out for that in a future post. :)

  Class things:

Kristen, a student of mine, brought in her daughter, Bella, for a class. I had to think of a way to introduce the Zentangle method to Bella whilst still teaching Kristen new patterns. I think the class went superbly well because Bella has decided to join future classes. Woohoo!

Here's a white tile that I messed up and painted over with black acrylic.
I love the tile now. And it's not a mistake if no one sees it, right? The Zentangle idea of "No mistakes; only opportunities." is very very true here. hehehe

Finally, an original tile with another pretty gem on it.
I like how the yellow and green leaves look neon in colour.
