Draw-wings

Here's my sketchbook page for this week's Zentangle challenge. The Diva wanted us to create a tile to celebrate Earth Day, and Joey wanted us to use the tangle "Spoken". I tried to make my page colourful and resembling a sunset.

Here's a page that I did just for fun. Featuring Fant-ik, Ilac, Diva Dance Waltz, and Printemps. I'll be teaching these patterns in my May classes.

And here are some envelopes I created for the Travelling Tangles Project.

I added some wax seals on the back of these envelopes.

  Pretty, isn't it?

And here are some tiles that two of my students created last week. They are eight and twelve years old.

Also, if you haven't seen it already, I posted a "How to Draw a Pink Gemstone" tutorial a couple of days ago.

Thanks for dropping by. I'll see you next week. :)

colours of the week

Let's kick off this week's post with some tiles from Travelling Tangles Project...

Firstly, here's a tile from Janet Shillam-Day sent to me in October 2017. She drew the tangles in white: Abundies, My Swing, and N’zeppel.

I played around with the idea of extending N’zeppel to other areas of the tile, but ended up doing a watercolour wash of blue and then adding Fassett to the area. Shading was added using Derwent’s Coloursoft coloured pencils.

Here’s a 3Z tile from Lin Laidler. I tried to make my Diva Dance sort of weave in and out between the other tangles.

Before....

And here's the after. No matter how many 3Z tiles I complete, I’m always so surprised by how small they really are. They get completed so quickly!

This was a tile from Barb Mavraganis sent to me in APRIL LAST YEAR (!) How quickly time flies. Yesterday morning, it spoke to me and I finally got around to completing it. It's the orange tile in this picture.

I added extra colours using Derwent’s Art Bar, and Coloursoft coloured pencils. The white is from a Uni-Ball Signo Broad pen.

Onwards, here are my tiles for this week's weekly challenges. Diva's challenge for Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day, featuring the colour purple.

And a tile for Joey's challenge, featuring String #165 and the tangle Exeter.

And a couple more tiles, just for fun. I found a new way to use Inktense blocks and Art Bars, so I'll probably be making a video tutorial soon. :)

And to finish the week off, a tile featuring my simplified version of Diva Dance.

Thanks for popping by. I'll see you next week!

pumpkin

Here are my tiles for this week's challenges... The top tile is for Diva's Challenge: Halloween. I don't think I've quite gotten the hang of drawing Gourdeous....

The bottom tile is for Joey's Challenge: Cylinder String, featuring Diva Dance. I used all the versions of Diva Dance, including my version of Rock and Roll. It's a simplified version of the tangle, and you can find step-outs to it via this link.

A Zendala inspired by Margreet Krijgsman.

Here's a tile I did in my sketchbook for #InktoberTangles
It's Oof with auras. I really like this version of the tangle.

And here's another page in my sketchbook:
The top tile was done just for fun. The bottom tile featured Q-belle for #InktoberTangles.
I hope you had fun with InktoberTangles. If you did, there are other challenges going around for November, namely #Giveatangle2017 and #Gratitangles. I hope you'll continue your habit of drawing once a day. And to everyone that took part in InktoberTangles, thank you for playing along. I hope you'll join the challenge again next year. :)

paint with the colours of the wind

Here's my tile for Joey's challenge:

Here's a tile from Raye Burnett for the Travelling Tangles Project. Raye started with Flux on the corners. So I decided to echo that with a lot more Flux-y tangles. Ando is featured, along with Fe-Ba for the background. And I don't know whether the top band in the quarter circle has a name but I've been using it in my tiles quite often lately. Shading was done with Tombow marker 977, and highlights were added with a white Uni-ball Signo pen.

There's a beautiful golden glimmer to it that the camera didn't pick up, so I took a video to show you, instead.

On a personal project front, I did some tiles in a rainbow format to play around with my Tombow markers.

These ones made up a circle, like a China plate.

And here's one tile with very beautiful edges.

If you live in Singapore and would like to purchase some Tombow markers, I sell them at the lowest cost possible. You can find out more via this link.

In other news, I will be going to an event to work on part of the art installation titled "Tree Canopy" by Japanese artists Hirotoshi & Nami Sawada at the Tower Wing of Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. The event is happening this coming Tuesday, 12th September, from 7:30pm. I will make a post about it the day after. :)

back-dated post

For some reason, this post was hanging out in my draft box and was never posted. (Oops.) But in any case, I thought you'd like to see the nice things I created.

Flukes and Hamadox. Simple yet so elegant.
If you look closely on the bottom left side of the tile, you'd see that I had tried adding dots using a white pen but ended up not liking it...

  Luv-a and Diva Dance Waltz.

A variation of Shattuck and Florz, with a rainbow background done using Derwent's Coloursoft.

This one is Bales with watercolours.

And another with watercolours featuring Diva Dance Waltz with Paradox.

  Thanks for looking!

Go big or go home.

My mum, Joni, and I had a workshop at Bukit Batok Zone 3 RC. We are in the process of creating a large 4m by 1m (13 feet by 3 feet) community art work. The purpose of the project is to get more people to find out about the Zentangle method, and also to create an art work that can be displayed at an art fiesta that Bukit Batok East Community Centre will hold in July.

This was the first of three workshops that we will hold in June for Bukit Batok East Community Centre. I prepped the four canvases by painting hearts in neon pink acrylic paint. The idea was that the participants would learn a few patterns in each workshop and add them to the white areas on the canvases. Here's the progress so far:
Joni is on the left-most. I'm the tallest in the photo. heh heh heh

Look at my cute apron.

Trying to build the confidence of the participants.
"There are no mistakes," we say.

On that note, I wanted to show you a page from one of our students, Connie. We taught "Garlic Coves" re-imagined, and she completed the page this way. How wonderful.

Here's my tile for last week's Diva (diptych) and Joey (Vano) Challenge combined. I recently got a full set of Tombow markers and decided to add shading with them. They're water-based so they don't have that strong smell that alcohol-based markers usually have, which is great. I've been loving them so far.
Vano and my version of Diva Dance Rock and Roll.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you've been inspired. :) Until next week, keep tangling!

Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day

Joey is running an alphabet challenge and even though I'm not too keen on the alphabets, I thought I'd still join in the fun on the tangles. So here's Dicso (no, not "disco"... It's a tangle that is drawn using the five elemental strokes- a dot, line, curve, reverse curve, and a sphere... or what we simply know as "ICSO". So the name is pretty fitting.)

The tile is up for swapping. If you're interested in having it and completing it, let me know in the comments section below. I'd love to have this tile as a swap for the Travelling Tangles Project. Done on an original Zentangle tile and colours were added with Coloursoft coloured pencils.

Today, is  Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day, and in a show of support, the Diva has asked the Zentangle community to create tiles using the Moebius Syndrome Foundation's logo as our string. Here's mine, paired with my simplified version of Diva Dance Rock and Roll:
I added purple watercolours in the background as it is the colour for MSAD.

Lastly, I've been practicing my typography and have been creating lots of works. I've also recently started a bullet journal, of sorts. It's very loosely based on the original bullet journal idea and I've just been doing what works for me. Here's a page from it with a quote by Rumi:
"Stop acting so small... You are the universe in ecstatic motion."

I hope it acts as a reminder to you to keep reaching for bigger goals and to keep dreaming bigger dreams. Until next week, my lovelies... Keep tangling! :)

burst of colours

This week's challenge from the Diva was to use the tangle "Drawings" (pronounced "Draw Wings"). I added my simplified version of Diva Dance Rock and Roll (step-outs to it can be found here), and some shading with coloured pencils.
I used a wonderful ATC-sized tile sent to me from Anne Marks as part of the Travelling Tangles Project. She did the background using watercolours.

Anne Marks also sent me another ATC tile, but this time, with a beautiful red background. I added Cadent using a Uni-ball Signo white pen.I also added shading to it using coloured pencils on the outside edges of the Cadent.

You should definitely join the fun over on the Travelling Tangles Project's Facebook page. You'll get to swap tiles with people from all around the globe.

Step-Outs to Eternity

I deconstructed this tangle quite a while ago, but only got around to making step-outs to it recently. I named it "Eternity" in honour of my relationship with my significant other. I hope that when you draw this tangle, you would think about your love to people who matter in your life. :)

Eternity can be used as a string, and as a border tangle. If you closed both of its tail-ends, you could also make it a stand-alone tangle. Hopefully you'll enjoy drawing it just as much as I do.

The other tangle featured is my version of Diva Dance Rock and Roll. It is a simplified version, and you can find step-outs to it via this link.

Step-outs to Diva Dance Simplified

I teach the Zentangle method to a lot of children, and earlier during June this year, I tried teaching Diva Dance- Rock and Roll in my classes. Most kids got it, some didn't; and I don't really like it when students don't "get" certain patterns that I teach as I think of it in the sense that there has to be a better/easier way for me to teach the pattern. ... And I found a way! I'm so excited to teach you how to draw my version of Diva Dance- Rock and Roll. I'm sure it'd be a great substitute if you're teaching it as a first tangle to someone who has never tried Zentangle art before, or to children and other non-children (or children at hearts. haha) who struggle with the original tangle.

The difficulty that the children I taught had with the pattern was deciding where and when they should add the "bumps". Some added too few and then it didn't look like the example that I had demonstrated for them. This made them frustrated. Others were so focused on the bumps that their aura didn't keep close to the bumps and they ended drawing something that resembled Printemps. I hope this video will also help.

And here's a page in my sketchbook where I drew it as a border. I'm going to be drawing a Zendala next to it, leaving a white border between the two parts.
