Review of #ANTSinSINGAPORE

#ANTSinSINGAPORE is South African artist Lorraine Loots’ first solo show in Asia. The exhibition will showcase one hundred of the artist’s prints from her Potluck 100 | Paintings for Ants series, as well as five original paintings made just for her Singapore exhibition.

Visitors can look forward to paintings from four different themes: ‘Microcosm Mondays’ features impressive watercolour paintings of galaxies and nebulas; ‘Tiny Tuesdays’ presents vintage book covers in minute detail; ‘Fursdays’ is a collection of animal paintings; and ‘Free Fridays’ lets Loots go wild with her paintbrush.

The exhibition is being held in K+ located inside Scotts Square, and ends on the 29th of October 2017. So do drop by soon if you're in the Orchard area. It's well worth the visit.

They provided magnifying glasses for viewers.

Tiny galaxies!

Teeny tiny circle featuring one of my favourite from her works.

Zooming in with the magnifying glass...

"To Kill a Mockingbird". Look at the details!

Her exhibition was an absolute joy to visit. If you really take the time to look through the art works, you'll notice tiny details that pictures on her Instagram don't often show. I loved the minimalistic frames, the way the art works were grouped, and the amount of space visitors had to explore the art works. The magnifying glasses were a great touch to the exhibition.

I didn't take more pictures so that you'll still have an element of surprise when you visit the exhibition. It's happening at K+ in Scotts Square, till' the 29th of October 2017.

Recommended Artist: Samuli Heimonen

Samuli Heimonen is a Finnish artist. Through his surrealist paintings, he explores the big questions of humanity, using metaphor and his love for animals and nature as a way to tell the story.

Recommended Artist: Aleks Klepnev

One of the two drawings in the series titled, "Last Attempt".

Pictured above and below are drawings from a series titled "Education".
I really like the symbolism behind these drawings. How children are represented by baby birds and a young bonsai plant... I'm sure you're able to form the other half of what he's trying to say.

Aleks Klepnev does watercolour works as well, but I feel his pen and ink works hold the most charm. He uses a little digital manipulation to complete his works (to add colour to the background and also to add texture), and I think it adds more interest to the pieces. The subjects he chooses to depict are really interesting.

Recommended Artist: Tobbe Malm

From his Bolt Poetry series

Tobbe Malm makes these bolts look so human-like. The bolts were found in a barn in Sweden. Then Tobbe heated, forged, bent, and twisted them to make them into these little sculptures. Each tell a story. Each elicit different emotions from the viewer. They're also all untitled because Tobbe wants you to form your own thoughts and stories about the little bolt people.

Recommended Artist: Mark Lovejoy

Mark Lovejoy creates richly textured images of mixed paint. He works from his studio in Alpine, Texas and is somewhat secretive about his process. However, the works aren’t just photographs of mixed paint. He mixes resins, oils, diluents, waxes, and drying agents to create the gloppy textures depicted in his works and then portions are photographed, reworked, and reshot. The results are the rainbow-y images that you see above.

Look! I even have one of his designs as a shirt.
Robert Farkas is a brilliant designer. Threadless is an awesome t-shirt print shop, and you can get the same shirt that I have, or many other designs right here via Threadless.com. (No, I am not affiliated with Threadless. I just love so many shirts printed by them... I proabably have nine shirts from them already...)

Recommended Artist: Iyan de Jesus

I first saw the works of Iyan de Jesus at the Affordable Art Fair Nov. 2014, and I fell in love with them. There's a sort of Art Nouveau combined with steampunk look to her works, and that's what makes her unique. The softness of the female form contrasted against the straight lines of metal work. I also loved how you can see how much she has evolved over the years from her early works to her current style.
