Joey's June Zentangle Challenge

This is my submission for Joey's 63rd Zentangle Challenge. The challenge was to use string 006 and just tangles that started with the letter "J".

Tangles used are "Jemz", "Jalousie", and "Japan Diamond".

The lines in this tile aren't as clean as I'd like them to be... "J" tangles are not my favourite... I liked using "Jalousie", though. Sakura pens were used for the black ink, plus a grey Derwent Graphik Line Maker, and pencil for shading. The background was made with Winsor & Newton watercolours.

Leave me a comment to tell me which "J" tangle you like to use the best!

Hope you have a great week ahead! ^-^

Illustrated Poem Series #007 and #008

"Destiny is not a matter of chance; It's a matter of choice.
It is not a thing to be waited for; It's a thing to be achieved."
-William Jennings Bryan

"Hatred paralyses life; Love releases it.
Hatred confuses life; Love harmonises it.
Hatred darkens life; Love illuminates it."
-Martin Luther King Jr.

Recommended Artist: Aleks Klepnev

One of the two drawings in the series titled, "Last Attempt".

Pictured above and below are drawings from a series titled "Education".
I really like the symbolism behind these drawings. How children are represented by baby birds and a young bonsai plant... I'm sure you're able to form the other half of what he's trying to say.

Aleks Klepnev does watercolour works as well, but I feel his pen and ink works hold the most charm. He uses a little digital manipulation to complete his works (to add colour to the background and also to add texture), and I think it adds more interest to the pieces. The subjects he chooses to depict are really interesting.

If you'd like to view more of his works, you can do so via his Behance.

Geisha (in a week): Day 7- Completed!

Part of my "Geisha in a Week" blog series.

So, it's finally finished. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Beautiful simplicity. Gorgeous line work. I couldn't be more happy with how much I've improved over the years. The inspiration behind it was when I saw another artist doing a drawing of a geisha, and I thought, "Hey, that's a great idea. I should draw a geisha too." And here we are. :)

Yin-Yang Fish- Completed!

"Yin-Yang Fish" by Stephanie Jennifer

Yin Yang Fish commission piece
I'm actually really pleased with myself for finishing this in two days and not dragging it out till forever... I think it's a beautiful drawing and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The lines are clean; everything is nicely inked; no smudges and all that. Now I'm just left with framing it.

Watch the process video of it below. You saw it first on this blog! It'd be up on my Instagram (@havepen_willdraw) in a few days. ^-^

Recommended Artist: Surgency Art

The amazing amount of details in his work is just breathtaking. I love the simplicity of the subjects he draws, and I'm awestruck by the amount of patience he has. The gorgeous works made in pen and ink. I also am a sucker for owls- an influence that Greek mythology had on me, with Goddess Athena and her spirit animal, the owl. You should read up on her. She was the Greek Goddess of arts and crafts, war, and agriculture; plus she was the favorite daughter of Zeus.

You should definitely view more of Surgency's art work here.

Stephanie's Sketches

Yes, I just referred to myself in third person. I've been trying to at least keep the pen (coloured pencils, pencils, brush, whatever) in motion every day. So I've started to keep a sketchbook. It's a $12 plus one, bought at Art Friend. A5 size. But I'm not doing a review of the sketchbook. Although I might, one day sometime soon. I'm going to show you some of the sketches in the sketchbook that I've done.

"Sphere In Red, Orange and Yellow"

"State of Mind"

"Nature In Orange"

"The Winds, The Land, The Sea"
I thought "Paradox" looked liked wind, "Diva Dance" looked like land, and the lower half of the zentangle pattern looked like water, thus the name.

"Zentangle: STEPH"

"Apple Still Life"
Done by layering an assortment of 16 colours in various ways onto the paper.

And here is the set of pens that I used for the above sketches. 16 colours. All of the same brand- uni-ball Signo DX 0.38. They are really good to use and lay down extremely well onto paper. I tried the 0.28 variant but felt that those scratched the paper a lot.

After a long hiatus, I'm trying to get back into the swing of posting on this blog more often. As always, if you'd like to be featured, or if you know an artist that has not been featured yet, Contact Me.

Leave me a comment in the comment section below telling me if you liked the sketches or not, and whether you'd like to see more of my works.
